Our awesome principal was able to get in contact with the Will County Sheriff's Department's K-9 unit, and they came out to meet with the kids, show their stuff, and answer questions. Meet Deputy Kane and his partner, Ryyker. We also had Deputy Bartunek and his partner, Tucker. The students watched as the dogs and their handlers showed what skills they had. The dogs were highly motivated by tennis balls! A couple of our students were chosen to rub their scent on objects and then hide them in the gymnasium. The dogs found these objects right away. At the end of the presentation, the officers answered questions, and then the students were able to pet Tucker (if they wanted to!)
It was a fantastic way to connect with what we read and to see it in real life. During our learning of the skills that go with this story, we talked about the author's purpose of giving directions. We learned about how to writing and looked at different texts that showed directions. As a final activity I thought that it would be interesting to give the students a recipe to follow...so we made goo... I already had a recipe for Oobleck, so I took that and typed that up for my students to use.
They had a BALL! I have to say that if I wanted someone to cook a recipe for me it would have to be these kids. They measured so carefully, they mixed so thoroughly, they followed the directions to a T! |
