For our latest STEMscopes science unit, we have been studying the ways that plants and animals go through their life cycles. We examined the life cycles of frogs, ladybugs, butterflies, chicks, cicadas, and mammals. The students were amazed (and a little grossed out!) by the life cycle of the cicadas. EWWW! We also examined the life cycles of plants: specifically lima bean, black bean, and grass. We did an investigation of germination of seeds. Some of our seeds did pretty well, others just kinda sat there.... For an art project that made this a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) project, we created a life cycle of a butterfly using dried pasta.
A special thanks to Mr. Renardo for giving a hand (and a Italian language lesson) with the pasta! This week in Reading we read a Judy Moody story called Judy Moody Saves the World. The kids learned funny ways that good ole JM tried to help the Earth without having much success. We then worked on a STEM project ... creating a Recycling mascot. Our criteria for the project was that: ~it had to be made entirely out of recycled materials ~had to stand on its own ~had to have a name ~had to have a slogan or motto We had a 30 minute design time and a 45 minute build time. Luckily Ms. Horan was on hand to give us a helping hand with the building. They turned out well! The students did well on their presentations! These kids inspire me! Here is Joshua explaining his project... In Social Studies we are talking about the Battles of Lexington and Concord and the Ride of Paul Revere. It just so happened that we were talking about his famous ride on the SAME day in history, just 243 years ago. The kids thought that it was just the coolest thing! Here is Colin explaining a little more....
