This is Halloween!

10/31/2018

We had a jammed packed day with so many fun (and some educational ;~) activities.

Our morning started with Fall Fest!

We then did some making words activities from Laura Candler. They did well trying to find 3 letter, 4 letter, 5 letter, 6 letter, and even 7 letter words.

For Math in the afternoon, we used the associative property of addition to create some "Monsters." We used some tri dice dies to roll a number sentence. We placed parentheses where we needed to, and then added. We had to create a monster based upon our findings. Lots of heads and eyes and body parts!

And finally, the big moment, the Halloween parade!

The students had some terrific costumes this year with tacos, skeletons, wizards, unicorns, dinos, and a really creepy clown.

Whoo hoo! Fall Fest!

Fall Fest is a wonderful activity that our SCO does. They have games, crafts, and bouncies and all kinds of good fun!

This year's fall fest just happened to be on Halloween. We were the first ones in the gym, so everything was fresh and new. The kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

Fire Safety

The Frankfort Fire Department came out today to talk to the students about fire safety: what to do in a fire, where to meet, how to get out...

The firefighters always do a great job of explaining things well and answering all of the students' many questions.

The students got a chance to see inside the truck as well in a walk-through.

Pushing and Pulling

10/24/2018

Don't worry...the kids are still behaving, no pushing or pulling of students 🤣...

The pushing and pulling that I speak of is the science kind, that of FORCES.

We spent some time looking at how objects move and how objects are affected by forces...frictional & gravitational. We talked about Newton's law, and we had some...FUN!

We first investigated with some forces of our own, our breath. We had to predict and calculate how far we could puff objects.
In our STEM curriculum, we study the concept of objects and motion with some learning stations. The students are given some objects and some general guidelines.
Picture
In the first station, they had cars and ramps. They had to see what would happen if you raised the ramp up higher or lower.

Picture
In our second station, they used a pull back car to measure the longest distance they could get.

In the third station, they used a marble
and a series of ramps to measure distance.

In the fourth station, they used a ping pong ball and a golf ball to move a box. They saw that higher mass equals higher force.
In the fifth station, they used some pendulums of varied length to see how mass affects force.
In the last station, they had to use washers to get a balanced force on the top of a ruler.
STEM science is such a great way for students to have that hands on learning! They understand the concepts well and can apply them. Awesome!

Roberto Clemente

10/19/2018

I love how my students connect to what we are learning. They do it all the time.

In this case, we were reading a story about Roberto Clemente, the pride of the Pittsburgh Pirates. One of my students brought in some of his baseball cards that her father had. The kids thought that it was really cool, some of the kids thought that he wasn't a real person. This just cemented it for them!

We made some pop up biographies of sports figures to focus on traits and motivations of characters.
