We have a stupendous program at Trail called Art Volunteers in the Classroom, or as we call it, AVIC. A parent or two will volunteer their time to come into our room to teach the students about a particular artist and then the students get to do an art project reminiscent of that artist. This year, we had the awesome Mrs. W to come help. She did a terrific job with the kids! We learned about two artists: Leonardo daVinci and Norman Rockwell. For the first project, the students had to use little posable figures to come up with a composition. For our second composition, the students all brought props to use in a portrait similar to those on the Saturday Evening Post. Great work from our budding artists!
Today is election day! As part of our social studies curriculum in government, we discuss the right of voting and the process that people go through in order to vote. One of teacher's fathers is an election judge, and we are fortunate to have an (old) voting booth. So we try to have a "mock" election every year.
We read the book, Duck for President, to the students, and we talked about how United States citizens register to vote and then vote in primary and secondary elections. This year in our state of Illinois there is not a presidential election but a gubernatorial one (for a governor.) I was impressed that my students were already up on current events. A lot of them knew who the candidates were. Anyway....back to good ole duck...he won by a landslide. Always does...I wonder why? 😄 |
